Thanks for commenting, Paul. I always call out Patients Like Me as the ultimate example of what you can do with social media/networking in healthcare. It shows us a pretty good picture (in my opinion) of what we'll see in the future. The only difference is that people won't have to input all their info and updates on their own, as it will all pull automatically from their personal health records (at least that would be the ideal). Who know how far that future actually is though? Always looking to hear new information from your team, please contact me when you've got some more.

Great post; what you said in the last para is one of our core principles - "People will IF they know that they’ll get something valuable in return."

Research is one of the valuable things we give back to our patients (and the broader community). You can see our latest peer-reviewed findings at www.patientslikeme.com/research. It's an exciting time for our research team; right now my colleague Jeana Frost is picking up the inaugural Medicine 2.0 Award from JMIR and we will have a few more exciting findings to share by the end of the year so stay tuned...

John,

Great post. This will lead to some great hypotheses. I agree. People are more than willing to give up privacy for convenience (how many people read facebook's or any other terms of service?), let alone opportunities to gain insight.

If any serious reform goes through, and people can't be discriminated against for pre-existing conditions, we'll see even more sharing and collaboration. The most important thing for most people is that they have the choice to opt-in to sharing their information.
