Hilda, No one here is arguing with you. I agree that these ads are way too expensive and accomplish little. I also happen to believe that no, they don't sell product. As for Caduet, it isn't new and, yes, it's much more than $18. The only argument I'll make is that simvastatin and atorvastatin aren't the same thing. Atorvastatin has been shown to be consistently more effective than simvastatin, but if your doctor says that's all you need, then no reason to change. Thanks for the comment.

"The goal of DTC TV is for product managers to work on an exciting TV shoot and get kudos for the creative ads..." Huh? Ads aren't for selling the product? I guess that's a good thing since they are the expensive drugs and we could all save money by using the generics anyway. Let me give you an example of the savings. I’ve seen ads on TV for Caduet. It has two ingredients. One is Amlodipine and the other is Atorvastatin. With my RxDrugCard I can get 30 tablets of Amlodipine for $9 and 30 tablets of Simvastatin for $9. I’ll bet they are charging more than $18 for this new drug!

Jonathan,

Nice post. There are all sorts of communities that can and will be built and supported by pharma, but I think it will happen in areas where the companies have the best product in the market. In these situations, more conversations = more prescriptions, and messages by their advocates (not the companies) will actually ad the kind of value you are describing. I hope the truth (as uncovered by mass conversations) will set us free. In the the 2.0 era, the best marketing is the lowest cost (un)marketing -- having a product people rave about so you don't have to!

I'm with you, John. What I was trying to do is use pharma's own arguments to support my own. I didn't think I could use yours as a way to persuade them (even if I agree sometimes).

Jonathan,

I'm sorry to point out a fallacy in your argument, which is that you have taken the drug industry's DTC "Kool Aid," namely that "the goal of DTC TV is to help people figure out they have diseases that would otherwise be undiagnosed."

This isn't the goal of DTC TV at all! The goal of DTC TV is for product managers to work on an exciting TV shoot and get kudos for the creative ads seen by millions and millions of people on TV.

Compared to that, the Internet is, OMG, BORING!
