Hi - Manhattan say that 80% of US docs have smartphones and 40% have iPads (that surprised me). In the UK the number of doctors with smartphones is also around 80% (survey Aug 2010 by www.D4.org.uk)

iPhone is way ahead as the most popular smartphone for UK doctors - will android take over in 12 months? Will Nokia make some progress with windows?

www.doctors.net.uk has had over 32,000 downloads of its news app and over 21,000 users in a month - that's pretty rapid uptake!

Excellent post. You are obviously well informed.

I think a lot of doctor's are already using their laptops and specialized medical mobile devices to view real-time patient diagnostics like EKG charts and digital x-rays imagery. So, no matter where they are, they can attend to a patient's needs on-the-spot, 24/7, 365 days a year.

I will have confess that this is the first time that I have encountered the term "eDetailing", and only because I received a marketing newsletter that covered the topic of eDetailing and other trends in the pharmaceutical industry.

If you are going to have a eDetailing app, why limit it to the iPhone. I would include all mobile platforms (Web Mobile, Droid and RIM).

I have a feeling that a lot of doctor's own a Blackberry, because it is a preferred platform for serious business users, including yours truly. But, I cannot prove it.

Doctor's are very busy people, especially surgeons, you can never reach them, except during an emergency, and even then, you will get a "if this is an emergency, dial 911" message.

There will have to be a very compelling reason for a doctor to read eDetailing messages. Big Pharma has the hard data on all their doctor's, so I am sure they will figure something out, unless some enterprising entrepreneurs finds a solution first.

I think a smart marketer could develop an integrated solution that combines social elements, both online and mobile, including video, geo-positioning and SMS TXT and mobile messaging that covers the world of prescription drugs.

I like the iPhone, but iPad maybe better suited because of its larger touchscreen, which could be used like a clipboard, except this one will be the next-generation clipboard.

This is all food for thought, but certainly gives me some ideas how this could be done.

I hope the next iphone will have flash built in, it will definitely help to build some interesting e-detailing presentations. The apps really changed the way people look at iphone, they see the added value they get from it, its a brilliant move from Apple. I also think it will gain market share and will be used in pharma a lot more than today.
