That's definitely a throwback, John. When you consider this goes back to 1996, it shouldn't bring much confidence that things are going to change soon. Looks like we're on our own.

You have to fire up the way back machine even further back than 2000! Back to 1996 to be precise. That's when I and several other ePharma Pioneers still in business were called into FDA headquarters for a 2-day public hearing on whether and how the FDA should regulate Rx drug promotion on the Internet.

I founded the Internet Healthcare Coalition (IHCC) in 1997 in response to issues raised initially by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) at a packed October, 1996 public meeting on use of the Internet by FDA-regulated entities (see FDA AND THE INTERNET: ADVERTISING AND PROMOTION OF MEDICAL PRODUCTS for a transcript of that meeting; http://tinyurl.com/djxumq). In 2000, the Coalition released the eHealth Code of Ethics in order to assure high quality information and services, protect privacy, and enhance the value of the Internet for both consumers and providers of health information, products, and services.

Have fun reading the transcript. Then fast forward to today. It's deja vu all over again!

Great angle I hadn't really considered. The FDA needs to not only account for what it wants or pharma companies want, but also what the public is demanding. Maybe that's who is going to ultimately push them to take some action.

Great post! Whether the FDA has established thorough social media guidelines or not, you can't stop consumers from talking to each other on-line. FDA needs to realize when developing guidelines that it's best to be aware of what people are saying about pharma companies, and that these companies have "clearance" to responses in order to clarify any inaccurate information being communicated. In return, consumers will feel they are being heard, and that alone will create very positive interaction. I'm all for pharma/biotech, FDA, and consumers all being happy!!
